Play. Explore. Learn. Dream.

These four activities are the core values of the Hancock Park District. Thanks to some dreaming by HPD, the Younger Family, and RCM Architects, Hancock County residents will have improved shelters to be able to play, explore and learn within Hancock Park District’s Riverbend Recreation Area.

Blessed with private funding in memory of longtime parks supporter, Mariann Younger, HPD was able to improve the functionality and aesthetics of two of Riverbend Recreation Area's existing shelters. Shelters #2 and #4 have been updated with architectural designs by RCM Architects.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held for Shelter #2 in June 2018, and construction began soon after. RCM re-envisioned this existing shelter, from the bottom up, featuring a new natural stone exterior with ribbon windows, wood ceiling and soffit, standing seam metal roof, and a new stone fireplace. This shelter is now enclosed and has interior lighting, as well as electrical outlets to provide power for events. The shelter will continue to serve the Findlay area for public and/or private parties or events. Construction was completed in the Spring of 2019.

Shelter #4 (Oxbow Activity Area) is being replaced with a new structure featuring similar aesthetics to Shelter #2 but will remain an open-air structure. The design includes bench-height walls between the support columns, with natural stone construction. Construction of Shelter #4 was completed this Summer.
